Tyrosine metabolism: urinary excretion studies in Parkinsonism.

چکیده
Vanilmandelic, homogentisic and homovanillic acid excretions were studied in parkinsonian patients on and off L-dopa. Vanilmandelic acid excretions were quantitated both by gas-chromatographic and calorimetric methods. A marked increase in the excretion of this acid was demonstrated in the parkinsonian patient as compared to controls. Although vanilmandelic excretion rises under the influence of L-dopa, the increase is much smaller than that of free homovanillic acid. The latter consistently accounts for some 18-20~/~ of the administered I,-dopa dose. While vanilmandelic acid excretions even under the influence of L-dopa correlate well with the patients’ weight, no such correlation could be obtained with homovanillic acid. Homogentisic acid could not be detected in urine specimens of patients either on or off L-dopa. No correlation was observed between the clinical status or response to L-dopa of the patients and their excretion of acidic urinary catabolites.

A Compound Heterozygous HPD Mutation in an Iranian Patient with Hypertyrosinemia Type III
Background and Aims: Hypertyrosinemia type 3 (HT3) is an inherited error in tyrosine metabolism caused by a mutation in the 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPD) gene. Here we report a one and half-year-old girl infant who was diagnosed based on increased serum tyrosine levels and increased urinary excretion of p-hydroxyphenyl derivatives. Materials and Methods: The proband was one and ha...
متن کاملSimultaneous determination of the four major catecholamine metabolites and estimation of a serotonin metabolite in urine by capillary gas chromatography of their tert-butyldimethylsilyl derivatives.
We have developed a routine capillary gas-chromatographic profiling method for simultaneous quantitative determination of the tert-butyldimethylsilyl derivatives of homovanillic acid, vanilmandelic acid, 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylethylene glycol, and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid and the estimation of 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid in urine. The method is useful for diagnosis and followup of pat...
متن کاملStudy on the effect of high calcium intake on serum protein bound iodine and urinary excretion of iodine
Iodine deficiency remains a major health problem in the world, including some parts of Iran. It has been recognized that there is usually a close and inverse relationship between iodine in the soil and water and presence of endemic goiter. Calcium has been suggested as one of goitrogens, though the definite role, extent and mechanism particularly in human have not been studied. Serum protein-...

متن کاملBoth stimulatory and inhibitory effects of dietary 5-hydroxytryptophan and tyrosine are found on urinary excretion of serotonin and dopamine in a large human population
Amino acid precursors of dopamine and serotonin have been administered for decades to treat a variety of clinical conditions including depression, anxiety, insomnia, obesity, and a host of other illnesses. Dietary administration of these amino acids is designed to increase dopamine and serotonin levels within the body, particularly the brain. Convincing evidence exists that these precursors nor...
